This momentum is the result of deliberate government priorities, bold investments, and a clear vision to position the country as both a hub for high-end eco-friendly tourism as well as Africa’s leading MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination. Kigali recently made history as the first African city to host the UCI Road World Championships, an achievement that brought unprecedented global visibility and branding opportunities.

Behind this growth is a supportive government framework anchored in the Tourism Master Plan, which emphasizes sustainability, digital innovation, and infrastructure development. Altogether, these elements create a golden moment for entrepreneurs ready to seize emerging opportunities within Rwanda’s dynamic tourism landscape.

Opportunities for Entrepreneurs

The boom extends well beyond hotels and tour operations. Demand is growing for fine dining restaurants, lounges, coffee shops, and lifestyle experiences that complement traditional tourism.

Wellness, cultural tours, curated experiences, and guiding services also present untapped opportunities.

Technology is another growth area, from booking platforms and payment systems to local review sites.

Tourism also links closely with agriculture and the creative industries, farmers supply hotels and restaurants, while local crafts, fashion, and cultural products enrich the visitor experience.

Agro-tourism, especially coffee and farm-to-cup tours, is fast gaining traction.

Entrepreneurs are essential to making Rwanda’s tourism sustainable, inclusive, and competitive. By sourcing locally, hotels and restaurants create opportunities for SMEs and farmers. Community-based models ensure inclusivity through hiring, sourcing, and revenue-sharing. Tourism generates direct income, fosters global networks, and enhances visibility. Indirectly, it drives infrastructure upgrades, expands digital access, and creates jobs.

Red Rocks Rwanda in Musanze, for example, has built a cultural hub that empowers women, promotes conservation, and attracts visitors from around the world. Entrepreneurs looking to join the momentum should consider focusing on three actions:

Specialize and own a niche.

Partner with cooperatives or agencies as well as RDB.

Build a strong digital presence.

Some businesses are born out of purpose. Others, out of necessity. For Marie-Aimée Umuhire, the story of Ihuriro Drink is deeply rooted in legacy, a daughter’s decision to continue what her mother began, and to carry it forward with purpose and pride. Marie-Aimée is the Managing Director of Ihuriro Drink, though the company’s real beginnings trace back to 1985, when her mother, Julienne, began crafting traditional Rwandan drinks made out of bananas and a sorghum concentrate.

“For us, it was more than a business. It was a way of life for my family,” she shares. In 2018, Marie-Aimée took a decisive step: she filed for official registration at the Rwanda Development Board, determined to professionalize her family’s operation, scale production, and reimagine the brand for a wider audience.

“I had questions,” she recalls. “Big ones. What should the name of our flagship product be? What kind of packaging should we use? I wanted to honor where we came from, but also give the business space to evolve.”

The answers began to come when she joined BPN Rwanda. Introduced by one of her mother’s longtime clients, Marie-Aimée was drawn to the opportunity for reflection and clarity. That’s how Yuliyana was born, a name inspired by her mother’s name Julienne, a tribute to her mother’s work and the values she built the business on. “It’s not just a drink,” she explains.
“Yuliyana is about joy, warmth, and connection.”

Ihuriro Drink’s flagship product, Yuliyana, in its 5L and 33cl packaging options

Through BPN’s coaching, Marie-Aimée found more than solutions to her branding dilemmas. She found a new lens for leadership and growth.

“BPN helped me think not just as a business owner, but as a steward of something bigger. Every decision now feels more grounded, more intentional.”

That same mindset led her to join the Business Owners Association (BOA) in 2023, after completing the core BPN program.

An unexpected spark at Peppe GmbH

Joining BOA wasn’t just about networking. “I admired their values, especially their focus on social responsibility and support for future entrepreneurs. That humility, forward thinking and culture of mutual respect resonated deeply with me.” In April 2025, she embarked on her first BOA study trip to Switzerland, an experience that would shift her perspective entirely “I expected to learn,” she says, “but I didn’t expect to be so inspired.”

One company, in particular, left a lasting impression: Peppe GmbH, the producers of Ingwerer. “Philip Jenzer, the original developer of the recipe, and I connected instantly,” she recalls. “He understood what it meant to create a product that tells a story. Their company’s philosophy aligned with mine: that quality and emotion must go hand-in-hand.”

Philip Jenzer (L) alongside Marie-Aimée (R) at Ingwerer Headquarters

Switzerland also introduced her to new ideas about partnerships, legacy-building, and vocational development. She was struck by how seriously the Swiss take business succession, and how they embed professionalism from a young age. “At Kaisin restaurant, I saw a food spot and an Adidas shoe stand sharing space. It reminded me that collaboration has the potential to be powerful where possible. It sparked new thoughts about how Ihuriro Drink might grow through strategic partnerships.”

That vision, however, isn’t just outward-looking. At the heart of it all is an unshakable commitment to quality. “I left Switzerland with one conviction: quality drives growth, trust, and reputation. It’s non-negotiable.” The trip wasn’t without hurdles. Visa issues nearly derailed her plans, but the BPN team found workarounds. “They didn’t give up on us,” she says. “That kind of support is rare. It reminded me why I believe in this community.”

For BPN core program graduates who haven’t yet joined BOA, Marie-Aimée’s message is simple: “You’re missing out. The exposure, mentorship and the opportunities we get are not things you can buy or get access to haphazardly. They come from being in the right environment, surrounded by people who genuinely want to see you succeed.”

Looking ahead, she envisions Ihuriro Drink as more than a successful company. She sees it as a symbol of generational resilience, quality rooted in culture, and of the possibilities that emerge when tradition meets innovation. “I’m still learning every day,” she says. “But now, I know I’m not walking this path alone. I want to see this company grow beyond borders, surpassing local and regional markets to global recognition.”

Many entrepreneurs start with passion, but passion alone doesn’t build a sustainable business. Aimable Ndizihiwe, founder of Izihirwe Arts, knows this firsthand. His journey from an artist to a business owner is a testament to the power of learning, adapting, and building strategically; with the right support system.

“I’ve always been an artist,” Aimable says, recalling his early love for creativity. He saw a gap in Rwanda’s interior design and furniture industry, there was little innovation, and he wanted to change that. In 2016, he launched Izihirwe Arts with the goal of producing high-quality, locally made furniture. However, he quickly realized that creativity alone wasn’t enough. “I thought my talent would carry the business, but I was wrong.”

Like many entrepreneurs, Aimable initially equated himself with his business. “I was the company, and the company was me,” he admits. He focused on creating and selling, without considering finances, structure, or growth strategies. When BPN reached out, he saw an opportunity to refine his approach.

Through business development training, he learned key business principles; bookkeeping, leadership, and financial planning. “It changed everything. I began to see my business as an enterprise, not just a personal project.”

He reflects that BPN didn’t just provide knowledge; it became a reliable partner in his journey. The program offered him the tools and coaching needed to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and take Izihirwe Arts to the next level.

Key Takeaways for Entrepreneurs

“I once thought my dreams were shattered. Living on the streets of Kigali with nothing but hope to cling to, I couldn’t imagine the life I have today“

This is the inspiring story of Jean Marie Vianney Habiyaremye, founder of Cow Horns Rwanda.

What started as an attempt to escape poverty has grown into something far greater: a thriving business that protects the environment, empowers others, and showcases Rwanda’s innovative spirit to the world.

Growing up in Bugesera, Rwanda, Jean Marie dreamed of a brighter future, but poverty forced him to drop out of school and move to Kigali in search of opportunities. What he found instead were harsh realities: no job, no shelter, and no clear way forward. Yet, life had an unexpected twist in store for him.

A Japanese woman discovered Jean Marie on the streets and taught him how to create stunning products from cow horns. This newfound skill became his lifeline, sparking a journey that would take him from despair to becoming a celebrated Rwandan entrepreneur.

The Birth of Cow Horns

Jean Marie didn’t just stop at mastering the craft. He envisioned something greater—a business that could make a difference. After years of refining his skills and attending programs to grow his business acumen, Jean Marie founded Cow Horns Rwanda, a company that transforms discarded cow horns into high-quality, eco-friendly products.

The turning point came when a major order from Japan allowed him to secure a workshop and acquire essential machinery. What began as a one-man operation has grown into an enterprise employing 13 full-time and 11 part-time staff, empowering his community while protecting the environment.

Production process- Transforming cow horns (raw material) into beautiful products

A Mission for Impact

Cow Horns Rwanda is creating beautiful products; it’s about creating opportunities. By upcycling waste materials, the company contributes to environmental protection while providing sustainable jobs. Its products, ranging from elegant household items to unique gifts, are now sought after locally and internationally.

Jean Marie’s dedication and impact haven’t gone unnoticed. His accolades include the Rwanda International Trade Fair Best Young Exhibitor Award (2017) and the RDB Business Excellence Awards Best Young Entrepreneur (2019).

Cups, bowls, souvenirs, combs made from cow horns

Business Professionals Network (BPN) came in to support him through personalized coaching, and business know-how. We helped Jean Marie expand his vision to gravitate towards a stronger reality.

Even after graduating from the program, Jean Marie remains closely connected to BPN. In a recent video, Cow Horns’ company vehicle was seen at the BPN office, symbolizing the enduring partnership. At BPN, the journey doesn’t end with graduation—it’s a lifelong commitment to supporting entrepreneurs.

Cow horns team’s recent visit to the BPN office

A Call to Action

Jean Marie’s story is a powerful reminder of what’s possible with determination and the right support. If you’re looking for unique, eco-friendly household items or gifts that carry the essence of Rwanda’s creativity and sustainability, look no further than Cow Horns.

By supporting businesses like Cow Horns, you’re not just buying a product—you’re empowering a community, protecting the environment, and contributing to a legacy of entrepreneurship in Rwanda.

This is more than just one man’s journey; it’s a testament to the transformative power of entrepreneurship and the mission of BPN: to turn challenges into opportunities and dreams into realities that solve problems and create jobs.

From scavenging for survival to running an award-winning business that upcycles waste into beauty, Jean Marie’s life is a testament to how hard work, creativity, and the right support can transform not just a person’s life but an entire community.

Visit Cow Horns today and become part of this incredible story.

Imagine a world where value-based learning and an entrepreneurial mindset are ingrained in the DNA of the younger generation.

That vision was noticeable during the Global Entrepreneurship Week (GEW) 2024 at Ntare Louisenlund School. BPN Rwanda was honored to celebrate GEW 2024 with the school. Our Country Director, Mrs Alice Nkulikiyinka, led two workshops with the Ntare students. Alongside some of Rwanda’s budding entrepreneurs, she also participated in a dynamic panel discussion, moderated by two students.

The theme of the week, “Entrepreneurship is for Everyone,” resonated deeply in this setting, where students as young as 13 displayed a remarkable understanding of entrepreneurship. This wasn’t just another standard workshop. It was a beautiful event of energy, profound discussions, and eye-opening moments that left everyone—students, entrepreneurs, and organizers alike—filled with hope for the future of entrepreneurship in Rwanda and beyond.

Ntare Student House with an Entrepreneur, Blandine

Why This Event Mattered

At BPN Rwanda, we believe entrepreneurship isn’t just about starting businesses—it’s about creating value, solving problems, and giving back to the community. That’s why this event mattered to us. We encourage our entrepreneurs to lead by example, and this day showed just how impactful that mindset can be. It wasn’t just about teaching; it was about mentoring, listening, and inspiring the teenagers to link their remarkable entrepreneurship knowledge to concrete, practical change in their own lives and communities.

Student-moderated Panel Discussion: Africa’s Rising Hub for Entrepreneurship

Youth Taking Ownership

From the moment we arrived at the Ntare School, the students set the tone for an unforgettable day. Each dormitory introduced themselves with chants that reflected their values and principles. It was vibrant, loud, and utterly captivating—a perfect way to kick off the event. But the real magic happened during the workshops. These teenage students weren’t just attendees; they were leaders in their own right. They moderated discussions with the poise of seasoned panelists and asked questions that left everyone in awe.

One standout moment was when a 13-year-old confidently asked, “How do you stay true to your values while managing the pressures of growth?” That level of depth and curiosity was nothing short of inspiring.

Lessons from Rwanda’s Finest Entrepreneurs

The event was also a platform for entrepreneurs to share their wisdom. Their stories were raw, relatable, and packed with lessons that transcended the business world:

Vivens Uwizeyimana , the founder of Umurava , shared a vital lesson: rejection is part of the journey. “In entrepreneurship, you’ll hear no more often than yes. Don’t let it drag you down. Learn from it, adjust, and keep going.” Takeaway: Rejection isn’t the end; it’s a stepping stone to greater opportunities.

Ignace Turatsinze , a champion of scalable solutions, compared entrepreneurship to the snake game. “Anticipate challenges and plan ahead. Love what you do so much that when the tough times come, you won’t burn out.” Takeaway: Passion and preparation are your greatest allies. Seek mentorship early and think big.

Umuhoza Amina , with her incredible story of resilience, reminded the students: “We didn’t have role models when we started, but now we’re here to guide you. Discipline will take you far. Embrace your uniqueness—it’s your superpower.” Takeaway: Dream big, stay disciplined, and lean into what makes you unique.

Classroom Workshops on Entrepreneurship with Ignace, Amina, Alice, and Vivens

A Glimpse of the Future

What stood out most wasn’t just the lessons shared by the entrepreneurs, but the brilliance of the students themselves. These young teenage leaders showed an understanding of entrepreneurship that was far beyond their age. They planned the day’s agenda, coordinated logistics, and ensured everything ran smoothly. Their confidence, creativity, and sense of responsibility were extraordinary.

A particularly memorable moment was when a young student confidently pitched an innovative solution to address transportation challenges on campus: a bicycle rental business. His idea was not only practical and thoughtful but also showcased an impressive ability to identify and solve real- life campus problems. This exemplified the emphasis Ntare Louisenlund School places on fostering critical thinking—an approach underscored by the Head of School, Damien Vassallo, who highlighted it as a cornerstone skill in preparing students for a successful future.

It was a moment of clarity: if we continue to nurture this kind of energy and mindset, the future is in safe hands.

Student Pitch: On-campus Bicycle rental service

This initiative showed that entrepreneurship isn’t reserved for adults with MBAs or years of experience. It’s for anyone willing to think differently, embrace challenges, and create solutions, including teenagers. They students reminded us of something essential: entrepreneurship is about more than business. It’s about values, persistence, and using your unique gifts to make an impact.

A Final Thought

As the day wrapped up, one thing became clear: the world needs more of this. More mentorship, more conversations, and more opportunities to empower the next generation.

Over the last 7 years, Rwanda has undergone a remarkable transformation. The “Made in Rwanda” policy, officially launched in 2017, was designed to boost local production, reduce the trade deficit, and promote the consumption of locally made products. By improving quality standards, providing incentives for local manufacturers, and encouraging innovation, the policy has enhanced the competitiveness of Rwandan products in both local and international markets. What began as a government initiative is now becoming a vibrant lifestyle, celebrated in the products we use, the food we eat, and the fashion we wear every day. This shift is not just about branding – it’s about embracing a unique identity and fostering a thriving entrepreneurial spirit.

“The ‘Made in Rwanda‘ policy is a testament to our commitment to self-reliance and sustainable development.” – Hon. Soraya Hakuziyaremye

From your morning coffee to the products in your home, the clothes you wear, and your favorite restaurant, many goods and services can now proudly be labeled “Made in Rwanda.” Each of these is a testament to Rwanda’s rich artistic heritage, blending vibrant colors and intricate patterns with modern elegance. Rwanda’s famed coffee quality, for instance, showcases beans known for their rich flavors and aromatic qualities, enjoyed by coffee enthusiasts around the world. Similarly, local designs demonstrate how craftsmanship can meet global trends, embodying the spirit of innovation and tradition.

Have you noticed that most businesses start with a lot of enthusiasm and over time, most of them loose that touch and become somewhat dull? In contrast, think about other businesses that seem to have a steady growth pace and the spark is somehow always maintained. This observation came about during a conversation with a business coach with over half a decade of experience and a renowned Entrepreneur at a launch meeting. As the conversation evolved it brought about a very important question. A question all business owners /entrepreneurs must ask themselves constantly as they go through the journey.

‘Why do some businesses start with so much zest and overtime witness a decline in innovation and creativity?’

If one were to reflect on this question from a national perspective, it would be: as the nation’s business sector continues to reach new heights, can creative complacency threaten the long-term sustainability and growth of businesses?

But why is this phenomenon happening one may ask, what is causing this complacency or decrease in creativity and innovation as businesses grow? In this article, we delve into one of the reasons behind this phenomenon, we explore the concept of a “creative rut” — a situation akin to writer’s block but applicable to entrepreneurs across various fields. The underlying causes of a creative rut range from psychological factors to external pressures and stressors, manifesting at different stages of the entrepreneurial journey.

Consider the following scenario: You are sitting in a restaurant you once loved so much but now, you no longer feel the spark, the menu no longer appeals to you, the environment no longer has that exciting factor. It feels like the restaurant owners have become comfortable; they no longer pay attention to the little details like they once did. It is no longer up to the standard that you once knew, and as a client, you feel affected/disappointed by this inconsistency, you feel like your needs are no longer met. It also feels like the times have changed, there are new competitors on the market and yet this restaurant did not grow with the changing times.

It is easy to look at this from a client perspective and point fingers. but pause! put yourself in the restaurant owners’ shoes for a moment. As an entrepreneur, you dedicate your time, blood, sweat, and energy to ensuring that your business is running. This means, spending many hours figuring out all the logistics and making all the business decisions. Over time this can feel more like a routine and soon enough you find yourself in the same shoes as this restaurant owner. Your business is slowly losing its spark, you no longer pay attention to your clients’ changing needs and the creative innovation is slowly falling into the cracks. Diane Izabayo, Business coach at BPN Rwanda, emphasizes the importance of recognizing that the customer is king, and creative solutions bring added advantages such as staying relevant, boosting customer retention rates, and gaining new customers. She defines ‘creative innovation’, as

“Finding the most relevant and fulfilling solutions to customer needs.”

As an entrepreneur, you must realize firstly that creativity is not just an attribute or a talent, it is a skill that can be harnessed by anyone willing to be inspired by daily actions. At every stage of the business growth, collaboration within a business can be a catalyst for creativity. Here are some ways that can help you instill more creative innovation in your business and keep the creative juices flowing.

1.Go back to basics: First remember what exactly makes you stand out, what is the secret sauce, the differentiating factor of your business. It all comes down to knowing who you are, your business identity, and perfecting those remarkable traditions. Revisit the initial vision! Perhaps you might have forgotten why you started the business in the first place. Go back to the blueprint and check if your business is still in line with its original vision. Remember the why of your business, the vision and direction you had put in place. Reviewing the early plans and goals allow you to rethink where the business is heading and allows you to put in new checkmarks to ensure that you create and innovate within the vision.

2. Engage a partner for growth: As an entrepreneur, you can get to a point where you lack a new challenge, especially when you have achieved previous goals. It might become though to see beyond where you are. If you cannot see beyond yourself, get someone to challenge you. The best partners for growth are business coaches, these are individuals who can be a sounding board and people who will help you see beyond yourself. Despite coaching being a relatively new concept in Rwanda, entrepreneurs are encouraged to explore its benefits.

3. Look into the Values of the business: As the business evolves, it is imperative that the entrepreneur adjusts their approach to creativity, making it a cornerstone for sustainable growth and innovation. One of the strategies can be to foster an environment, a culture, where creativity is embraced. If creativity and innovation were never part of your values in business, then it becomes difficult to preserve what was not there in the first place. Establish guidelines and specific direction around instilling innovation as one of your values and have a clear structure to make sure that you follow those guidelines when creating and innovating. Keep curators and checkmarks to maintain a parallel to growth, while incorporating modernity and the change in times.

Consider leveraging the collective strength, different perspectives and skills sets from your team. Creativity is not something for a special group, it is a mindset, something that can be built on, learnt, and developed. Be inspired by your environment, being vulnerable to share that process with your team. They are the ones who are in the details, they can see deeper and can foster impactful innovation.

4. Customer centricity: Reflect on the “why” behind the business’s existence and ensure alignment with the needs and desires of your customers. The question of “whom am I doing this for?” should guide innovation efforts, emphasizing a customer-centric approach to creativity.
